Obama Care and the Fat Girl. I know this will be controversial and I can ONLY speak for my own experiences. It is DAMN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to get health insurance when you are fat, self employed woman in America. I have mostly only had MAJOR MEDICAL for the past 10 years I have been self employed.
I signed up for California Care via the governments website and had ZERO problems signing up. It was a super long form I had to fill out. But, I have done these a dozen times over the years only to be declined. This time, I was ACCEPTED! Yes, I will have regular insurance as of January 1. Yes, it will cost me an arm and a leg. I wish it were more affordable. I am just so happy to NOT have been turned down.
What really chaps my hide is that I am HEALTHY. I am fat. Yes. We can all agree on that one. But, I get a cold usually once a year on Christmas Eve. I go for my Well Woman exam every February. Mammogram once a year since I was 41. Paid for EVERYTHING out of pocket for the past 10+ years. I take no meds. I take no supplements. I do not have high blood pressure, my cholesterol levels are good, I am not diabetic. But, what pisses me off is that before Obama care – those insurance companies turned me down based SOLELY on my height and weight. They never bothered to have me submit a blood test or urine test. Just two bubbles I completed on their form. They decided I was unhealthy based on my height and weight. Such bullshit.
I am sure there are MANY people who are upset with Obama Care – but I can tell you that for this SELF EMPLOYED 45 Year Old Fat Girl – I will finally have health insurance and I am so excited to feel like a “normal” human with health care.
